Pre Entry Assessment
This is an assessment of your sailing skills and background knowledge by an ISA
Trainer (rather than instructor). It is normally a 1 day assessment in the form a
written paper to check your theory knowledge and of a practical assessment in a
dinghy
that has main, jib, spinnaker and trapeze.
The level of skills required are that of Level 4 Advanced Sailing Skills.
Check out http://www.sailing.ie/dynamic/pdf/Pre-entry%20assessment.pdf for full
details on the Pre Entry Skills assessed.
We advise any students planning to go for their Pre Entry to read the syllabus
carefully and ensure they are ready to perform the techniques required. Many sailors
often fall down on Rudderless, Tight Circles, Sailing Slowly or are just unfamiliar in
sailing the type of boat that they are being assessed in.
The reason for this assessment is that is is of vital importance that an instructor can
jump into any dinghy and sail it professionally and confidently with complete novices as
crew or teach a complete novice to sail it from the distance of a safety boat.
The written assessment will cover things like navigation marks, rules of the road, rule
of 12's, chart work, manoeuvres in different conditions and much more, these are often
subjects that many young sailors would not have experienced much of and we recommend that
trainees study them well before assessment. Again, it is important for a Dinghy
Instructor to understand all of these subjects as they will need to be able to give a
lecture on them to their students.
There are a few different ways of achieving your Pre Entry -
- 1 Day Direct Assessment (we take a maximum of 3 students)
- 2 Days - 1 Day of Boat familiarisation & 1 Day Direct Assessment (again a max of 3
students)
- 8 Day Advanced Sailing Skills & Adventure Sailing Course, with Pre Entry on day 8 -
this a brilliant course as it gives the trainee a chance to really polish on his or her
skills and the adventure trip day sails give the student to use a dinghy in a way they may
not have done before, passage plan and navigate to a chosen destination, anchor up and
explore. This course has been design to take the 'sting' out of the intensity of the
traditional 5 day Level 4.

If you are a parent organising these courses for you child, we would recommend asking
them to ring us and discuss their level of sailing skills, so we can help you choose the
correct course.
