What does Sail Training offer our country, it's coastline and people?
Sail Training brings young people into contact with the shipping industry, which in turn wil help grow the Irish Marine industry & the number of Irish mariners.
A Sail Training vessel advertises Ireland abroad as a maritime nation. Shows we are open for business. We have intelligent hard working young people that are well behaved when abroad.
Sail Training takes youngsters out of the country and shows them we are all the same. Which in turn reduces fanatical nationalism. Combining young and old as crew creates a dynamic for both to understand eachother in a new environment.
95% of Imports/ Exports travel by sea, yet 75% of the population of the island are unaware of this. Sail Training helps to bring attention back to the sea, maritime trade, marine fishing & leisure industries.
Many maritime training centres – naval & commercial – including fishing, believe that time spent under sail is beneficial to the students as it improves their understanding of weather and the behaviours of the sea.
