100% Pass Rate on Commercial Yachtmaster Training Course
St Patrick brought a bit of good news this weekend for 8 trainees
at the West Cork Sailing and Powerboat Centre as bottles of champagne
were popped to celebrate the successful completion of this year’s
intensive Commercial Yachtmaster course.
All 8 Trainees, who had worked very hard for the last 6 months,
passed their exams over the last 5 days. The Yachtmaster Examiner
was quoted as saying “Their sailing skills exceptional. I
can’t believe that some of them had never sailed before they
joined your course”.
The guys at WCSPC are thrilled for the students and are already
looking forward to next years course with confidence, having chartered
a 72 foot steel challenge yacht to do the mile building section
next year.
This is huge achievement for the students, all of them from very
different backgrounds, who will now hopefully go on to work within
the industry.
• Simon Wilson, a 27 year old entrepreneur from Newtownards
wanted to find a new opportunity. He owned his own small yacht and
would sail when ever he could take time away from his business interests.
This was not often enough, so when Simon found out about the Intensive
course available in Ireland he jumped at the chance to invest in
a new future. Simon is now training to become a Cruising Instructor
and Dinghy Instructor and will be working in West Cork this summer.
• Michael Lillis, a 50 year old Health Service executive from
Macroom on a years break who had never sailed before and wanted
to do something positive with his career break. He can now confidently
charter a boat anywhere in the world and enjoy sailing with his
family and friends.
• 21 year old Toni Liebscher, from Germany, wanted to take
an alternative route to University and make a career at sea. Now
a qualified Commercial Yachtmaster, Toni has already moved on to
train as a Dinghy Instructor and will be working in Ireland for
the summer at least.
• Sue Enright is a 28 year old IT specialist that decided
2 years ago to fulfil a dream of changing careers from IT programming
and training to yacht deliveries and cruising instruction. Sue is
a PADI Dive Master as a hobby and wondered if she would ever be
able to work as sea for a living. After discovering the West Cork
Sailing & Powerboating Centre Commercial Yachtmaster Intensive
Training Course, she had made her decision to start saving and join
the course a year and a half later. With Sue’s qualifications
she now intends to work as a cruising instructor for the summer
and head to the Caribbean for the winter.
• John Shanahan is a 43 year old professional welder that
has been riding on the wave of the property development boom of
Ireland. His skills as an expert welder are still in great demand,
but John wanted more fulfilment in his life, so he chose to take
the training course. Now he is qualified he plans to split the year
between his welding and his new sailing career, delivering yachts.
• Patrick Williams is a 43 year old tile-er that damaged his
back. He could no longer tile so he looked for new career options
and found this course. Patrick hopes to run day trips on yachts
for the summer and will set his sights further a field for the winter.
• 18 year old Phillip O’Reilly saw a poster for the
course in his local sailing club, Bray Sailing Club, and decide
he would take a Gap Year before starting University. Phillip will
now be skippering yachts for the many boats in Dun Laoghaire in
his summers while at University.
• Steve Marquart from Durrus took early retirement and has
dreams of sailing off into the sunset.
